Today is the 'Day of Sleep', did you know that sufficient sleep is also essential for our feathered friends?
To prevent health, well-being and behavioral problems, it is important that a parrot or parakeet gets more than enough sleep. This should be at least 10 to 12 hours, during which the bird can sleep in complete darkness and silence. Throwing a cloth over a cage, while the cage is, for example, in the living room where the rest of the residents are happily watching TV, is therefore not a good solution.
Offer the bird(s) their own space that can be made completely dark.
Remember that it is also pitch dark at night in the tropical rainforest. Use a sleeping cage (a small cage/bench) that the bird does not stay in during the day. Let the bird sleep here for 10 to 12 consecutive hours. This way you create an environment in which they can really relax and you prevent problems. As a perch, use 1 or more branches, with varying diameters, that are more inclined than horizontal. Remember that birds in nature sleep in branches that are never really horizontal...
